Transcript: Generative Trance
by Stephen Gilligan, Ph.D
Welcome to the News Letter.
With the possible exception of Milton Erickson himself, there is no one we're more excited to have contribute to this site than Stephen Gilligan, Ph.D.
Dr. Gilligan was one of the original group of explorers present in the early days of NLP with Richard Bandler and John Grinder. It was during those heady days that he met and found himself drawn to the trance-work of Milton H. Erickson, MD. He spent years immersed in the work of Dr. Erickson as one of his foremost students. Today Dr. Gilligan is arguably the pre-imminent authority on Ericksonian Hypnosis. His books include
"Therapeutic Trances - The Cooperation Principle in Ericksonian Psychotherapy," considered a classic in the field.
The article contributed today by Dr. Gilligan is an edited transcript of his opening remarks at a 12-day "Trance Camp" held near Hamburg, Germany, in January 2007. (The transcript of the entire workshop will soon be published in a book entitled, "Generative Trance.") In this article Dr. Gilligan contrasts traditional hypnosis with Erickson's approach to hypnosis and psychotherapy. He also gives us insight into what he terms "generative trance," defined "as an opportunity to deeply accept every part of your life in ways that allow amazing new learnings and developments to unfold." These distinctions are a perfect addition to this web site and are important for anyone working in this field to understand.
